Many of these structures remain empty for most of the week, offering no sanctuary for the poor, no community center, no office for ministry operations, and no real social impact. Yet pastors encourage congregants to give, sometimes indebting themselves or the poor in the process. Before you criticize me as a religious cynic or narcissist, consider this: Israel had no temple while in Babylon, yet they worshiped and offered sacrifices. In the new dispensation, the physical gathering as we know it is becoming irrelevant. Churches built as monuments to prestige, rather than ministry, fail the very people they claim to serve.
